How to measure your dog for a harness

It is best to attempt this after you have exercised your dog when you have a (slightly) better chance of your little terror standing still long enough!

Top tip: Measure the dog, not the fur!

Measuring your dog for a harness

For an x-back harness:
You need to take two measurements: ‘Neck’ and ‘Tail’.
Neck: Don’t wrap the tape measure right around your dog’s neck – you are not measuring for a collar. Measure in inches, from the base of the back of the neck, to just above the breastbone. This will give you a ‘half’ measurement which you will need to double to give you an accurate neck size.
Tail: Measure from the dog’s breastbone and take the tape between the front legs, up one side of the body and finish at the base of the tail.

Make sure your dog is standing straight for an accurate measurement. You may need a helper!

Standard stock x-back harnesses come in fixed neck:tail sizes. i.e. all 21” necks have a 27” tail. If your dog does not fit these sizing combinations, we can get custom sized harnesses made for you. But we recommend you try the nearest sizes first from the standard range to check fit, as custom harnesses are non returnable.

For a Scootering Harness:
As this type of harness fastens around the chest and is adjustable in that area, you only need to take the neck measurement, in the same way as for the x-back harness.

For a Sidewalker Harness:
This type of harness is adjustable in several places, again you only need take the neck measurement.
